THE FIRST stage of a multimillion dollar sports hub is under way in Parklands. The Pukeko Centre Sport and Recreation Community Hub, on the site of the Parklands Bowling Club, will provide indoor and outdoor recreation facilities for a number of local groups. It will become a venue for meetings and events and will also be used by nearby Parkview Primary School. The Pukeko Centre is a joint venture led by the Parklands Bowling Club and Parklands Junior Rugby Club. The bowling club suffered extensive damage in the February 22, 2011, earthquake, and the rugby club was left without a home, so three years ago they decided to work together to create

The clubs plan involved moving two buildings from the former Freeville School to the bowling club site in Chadbury St. The buildings had been earmarked for demolition but were given to the clubs by the Ministry of Education. The first building was relocated in May and will become the club and meeting rooms. It will open before the end of the year. The other – a larger building that was once the school’s hall – is expected to open next year as a venue for indoor sports, performances and events. The hub will offer bowling greens, a playground and all-weather courts for netball, petanque and tennis. •Turn to page 4

THE NEW Parklands sports hub looks like being a great addition to the area – and no surprises on its name (see page 1). Pukeko have to be quick and nimble, usually to avoid vehicles on the road, in the east – and quick and nimble is what the catch cry will be at the new sports centre. Parklands sport does need a shot in the arm. It has potential to be a strong base for a variety of codes with kids from new families a decade and a bit ago now starting to grow up. A good example of that is the Parklands under-14 football team (see page 11) which beat an Auckland side to win their grade at the Christchurch International Cup tournament. The hub will be great for the community. – Barry Clarke

News Fridge feeds up to 80 a day By Caitlin Miles AN INITIATIVE to give away free food in New Brighton has taken off with more success than first thought. Waimairi Beach’s Trudy Burrows started up a community fridge and pantry last month, and she has been “overwhelmed” by the amount of people using it. She said most days Trudy there are between 50 Burrows to 80 people there getting what they need from the fridge and pantry, located at 46 Hawke St. “We stock it up two times a day and, by the end of the day, it is empty again,” Mrs Burrows said. That doesn’t bother her, though, she’s glad people who need it are using the service – as long as they don’t use it to get all of their groceries. “Sometimes things can get expensive – an unexpected bill can make it hard to eat,” she said. She said plenty of people donate what they can – whether it was a loaf of bread or filling up the whole fridge. The Canterbury District

said. She said she was also surprised by the people offering their help. “I’ve had offers from people in Sumner, Mt Pleasant and Redcliffs. I can’t believe they would offer to come all this way,” she said.

In Brief PLAYGROUND FEEDBACK CLOSES ON SUNDAY It’s the last week for New Brighton residents to provide their input into the New Brighton Beachside Playground plans. The plans include three distinctive play zones – a water-play and splash-pad zone, a dry play zone, and a toddlers’ zone. A range of features have been proposed for the three different areas and the iconic whale will remain in the wet area. There will also be quiet spaces and inclusive play components for disabled people. The consultation period will close on Sunday. Marathon knitting effort to mark WW1 centenary KNITTED POPPIES have been on display throughout the Linwood Library thanks to Vonnie Kondra who put her knitting needles to work to make more than 350 of them. The city libraries got involved with a Government-run programme called WW100 – which marks the centenary of World War 1. One of the library staff suggested getting the community to make poppies for a display. Ms Kondra got involved in the project after her friend sent her to the library to get knitting and crochet patterns for poppies. She decided to pick up her needles and help out with the project – but she didn’t just make one or two, she made 360. Although she started out with her own wool, it didn’t take long before the Woolston Community Centre donated $50 towards more wool, with others donating wool as well. Some members of her family were involved in WW1 in France, Palestine and El-Alamein in Egypt, which made it a very special experience for her. Ms Kondra used to knit for her son and said this project was a

ciation. Ms Kondra is a member of the Woolston Community Centre, volunteers at the Ferry Rd Charity Barn, is a helper with the Edmonds Factory Gardens and is also a packer for the Linwood Fruit & Vege Co-op.

The bowling club’s insurance payout, along with $600,000 already raised through grants
from the Rata Foundation, New Zealand Community Trust and Southern Trust, means that stage one of the project is fully funded. News Expo shows off community LIVING IN Linwood, Woolston, Bromley and Phillipstown is something to celebrate. That’s why the city council will host It’s Great to Live Here 2017 expo on Friday from 11am to 3pm at Eastgate Shopping Centre. The theme this year will be: Community communication and connections. When asked about what they love about living in greater Linwood, residents often talk about the people, the convenience and the sense of community. The annual expo, which has been running for more than 10 years, will celebrate what’s great about living, working, playing and learning in the area. The expo is a partnership between local community groups and organisations, some social and public service groups, Eastgate Shopping Centre, local businesses and the city council. Residents, community groups and businesses come together to celebrate what they value about the area, whether it be diversity, resilience, vibrancy or strong community spirit. Wheelchair users will get to use beach mat By Caitlin Miles GETTING A wheelchair across the soft sand at the beach is about to get easier thanks to a special mat. Come the summer season the North New Brighton Residents’ Association and North Beach Surf Club will roll out a special wheelchair mat as a trial. It’s designed to make it easier for those in wheelchairs and with other mobility disabilities to get from the concrete across the soft sand and onto the hard sand near the water. Association chairman Josiah Thompson said it was “very exciting” to be able to provide the mat so the less able would not miss out on enjoying the beach. The mat will be stored at the surf club, every morning it will be rolled out and brought back in at the end of the day by the surf club. Mr Thompson said he hopes following the trial they will be able to keep it permanently but will need to wait and see.

Finding reward in teaching Teacher Richard Jolly is head of social science at Linwood College but in his former life, he was a London-based oil trader who travelled the world. Sarla Donovan talks to him about what a trader does and why he moved to Christchurch
Oil trader to social studies teacher – why the change? To do something worthwhile and bring up a family in Christchurch. I taught in Camp America for a year before oil trading and loved it. I wanted to go back to it; teaching students is very rewarding – and there’s not many oil trading jobs here. It sounds exotic. It is exotic. I travelled to many countries – the United States lots of times, Egypt and Russia and the Baltic States. I was based in London, but did a lot of work in Hamburg and Zug in Switzerland. It’s a great life, but if you have small children you never see them. I spent hours and hours oil trading and realised one day, sitting at my desk that I was paying a nanny to take my daughter to the beach. That’s really when I decided to make the change. That was 14 years ago. We moved from Switzerland to New Zealand and I trained at the New Zealand Graduate School of Education. My wife Beth is from Methven but it wasn’t all her choice, she certainly wasn’t putting the pressure on to come back. What do oil traders need to be good at, what’s involved? You need to be good with people, good with numbers and good at making decisions. I’d make contacts in different countries, buy large quantities of oil, organise shipping, ship
it halfway across the world, hedge the price using the futures market, talk to refineries to process it. So, you have to work with a lot of different people. Are there any similarities between the two jobs? Not a lot – the lunches are quite different! You’re still working with people though, that’s the same. So were you here during the earthquakes? Yes . . . but I wish I wasn’t. How did they affect you? Not good. We lost our house in the February 2011 earthquake and like many, it took six years to get it replaced. Meanwhile, we moved 13 times, including one year back in the UK. I was offered a job back in oil trading when we went back but chose to stay in teaching and worked in a very posh English public school, Dauntsey’s. So Linwood’s not the only school you’ve taught at? No,
Are your family still back in the UK? Yes, people are still around. My parents have lived in the same place for 52 years and I try to get back every year or 18 months. I also have four brothers over in that part of the world. Did you attend a co-ed school like Linwood? No, I went to a boys grammar school; we were academics and rugby. The teachers wore gowns and it was very formal. The school was good for me, it got me into Cambridge University where I studied engineering. It was amazing – I was
prior to the earthquake I worked at Catholic Cathedral College, which I very much enjoyed, and only left because my house was destroyed. I commuted in from Methven for a few months but then got a job at Mt Hutt College followed by a spell back at Dauntsey’s. Did you grow up in the countryside back in the UK? I grew up in a town called Beaconsfield, just outside of London, and it was great but the town has now been swallowed by London commuters and is not really very nice now.

there for three years – we had our bicycles, played sport, rugby and hockey. And from there I won a scholarship to do my masters in the US, then became an oil trader. Your three kids must keep you pretty busy these days. Do you find time for sports or hobbies? I sometimes think I run a taxi service; football, ballet, gymnastics. Weekends involve cheering my kids on in their sports and trying to get out myself for a hit of tennis or a round of golf. I think it’s important that we find time to balance our lives, it makes you a better parent and a better teacher.

Volunteers awarded VOLUNTEERS from Marshland were celebrated for their contributions at the Papanui-Innes Community Board community service awards. INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS: The National Brass Band of New Zealand, which includes 13 Christchurch members, were runners-up in its section of the World Music Contest.
Woolston Brass members play big role in international success CHRISTCHURCH musicians feature prominently in the National Brass Band of New Zealand, which was named runner-up in the brass band section of the World Music Contest. A third of the band members are from Christchurch, with all but one playing for Woolston Brass. The contest is held every four years in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. The New Zealand band’s programme opened with Whakarangatiratanga, commissioned from New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. The programme also featured a new major work written for the band by renowned English composer Peter Graham. The 39th Parallel is based on the landscape and mythology of the Wanganui region in memory of brass band
icon Kevin Jarrett. This year more than 20,000 musicians, making up 260 bands from 32 countries and five continents, participated. The band performed concerts in Stein, Netherlands, and Aachen, Germany, before returning to New Zealand last week. •The 13 Christchurch musicians are Kevin McMorran, New Brighton, Anthony Smith, Sydenham, Kevin Hickman, Sydenham, and his brother Graham, Huntsbury, Andrew Yorkstone, Burnham, Joe Thomas and Sam Pinder, Hoon Hay, Phillip Johnston, Spreydon, Nigel Seaton and his son Jordan (the youngest member of the national band at 20 years of age), John Mason, Burnham, Cameron Lee, Ilam and Vaea Peterson, Halswell.

Sharon Webster Ms Webster has been an active club leader at the Marshland Scout Group for 22 years. She helps run the Thursday cub scout meeting each week, as well as attending various scout training courses, planning meetings, camps and activities throughout the year. The scout group enables its members to experience various fun activities. With Ms Webster being an active leader within the group, it means the members do not miss out on these opportunities due to a lack of people volunteering to be leaders.

Knit and Knatter The group started in 2007 with five members and now has more than 15 members who meet once a fortnight for two hours at the Shirley Community Trust premises. But each of
them knit for about two or three hours each day. The group has knitted and crocheted a large variety of items, such as blankets, beanies and baby items. Last year, the group produced 2000 knitted items and so far this year it has knitted 636. The knitting is passed on to a variety of organisations, hospitals, pre-schools and schools. The knitters benefit by being able to join together and form friendships over an activity they enjoy while producing a large range of useful items for donation to organisations and agencies.

Jay’s off to Aussie rules territory to represent NZ NEW BRIGHTON’S Jay Johnson has an opportunity to take his talent to the home of Australian rules football when he represents New Zealand in Melbourne next month. It will be Johnson’s second appearance at the AFL International Cup when he takes the field for the New Zealand Hawks. Johnson, who plays for the Eastern Blues, is the only player selected out of the Canterbury Australian Football League. Johnson was introduced to AFL in 2012 by All Blacks sevens player Sam Dickson and fell in love with the game. He made his debut for the New Zealand senior side in 2014. “I love the space. It’s a 360 degree game. It’s a sport where even if you’re going backwards you can still end up going forward. There is always time to make something happen, which is satisfying,” said Johnson. “I can’t wait to run out there with the boys. There are teams coming from all over the world. Places like Sweden, America, South Africa and Papua New Guinea.” While Johnson plays for the Blues in the Canterbury league, he also plays for the Western

INTERNATIONAL: AFL player Jay Johnson will represent New Zealand in Melbourne next month. Crows in the AFL New Zealand Premiership. He appreciates the AFL culture. “There’s a real community spirit with this sport and I enjoy that.” The AFL International Cup is an amateur tournament played every three years. At least 18 countries are expected to be represented, demonstrating the rapid growth
the sport is experiencing outside of Australia. Expatriate Australians are not eligible to play in the tournament. This year’s final will be played as a curtain-raiser to an AFL match at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground. New Zealand hasn’t won the cup since their victory in the second edition of the tournament in 2005.
PARKLANDS under-14 football team were crowned champions after a 2-0 win over Auckland’s Western Springs in the Christchurch International Cup tournament. The tournament is in its second year and has six grades from under-9 to under-14, with the under-13 and 14 grades starting the tournament off on July 8-9. Parklands were the most successful Christchurch club in the 22-team tournament after FC Nelson beat Harewood’s Nomads United in the under-13 final 2-1. Parklands dominated pool A, winning all three games. They then beat Selwyn United in a penalty shoot-out in the quarter-final and took down FC Twenty11 1-0 in the semi-final to advance.

Nomads under-13s proved to be a strong side during the tournament. They made the final after beating Christchurch United FC Academy on penalties, while FC Nelson beat Cashmere Technical in the other semi-final. In an exciting final, FC Nelson went up 2-1 in the first half and, after a scoreless second half, they took the under-13 cup up to Nelson. Tournament director Ricardo Felitti said it’s great to see clubs from all over the country competing against each other. “All the teams that are coming down to Christchurch come down to win the tournament. They put out their best squads, which contributes to the level of the tournament and makes the tournament even more competitive,” he said.

Chris McCalman – For what it’s worth my family lived in the area from the 1930s and was always North Beach – the school, surf club, the memorial hall were all North Beach when I was growing up. Mary Hutching – When I was a kid growing up there mum used to say defensively “we live at North New Brighton not Brighton.” Christchurch was so snobby in those days about the east side. I would have said that North Beach
used to refer to the area around the sea but North New Brighton covered the wider area. Maria Mann – I lived in Effingham St in the 70s, early 80s it was called North Beach. Our school was called North New Brighton School. Nadine Godman – North Beach will always be North Beach to us locals so why waste money deciding wether or not to call it anything else? New treatment for fungal nails Feet First, the long-established podiatry clinic in Upper Riccarton, now has a much more efficient and effective means of dealing with the problem of fungal nails, thanks to a new machine they recently obtained from Britain, where it was designed and trialled. Clearanail is a procedure where the Podiatrists use a machine to make tiny holes in the nail without affecting the nail bed – a completely pain-free procedure that then allows the topical application of antifungal solution to directly reach the problem area. Fungal nails may cause the toenail to thicken, which consequently can make shoes feel uncomfortable. CHICKEN BREAST WITH MUSHROOM STUFFING AND MARSALA GLAZE Ingredients 1 Garlic clove 1 Shallot, or small onion, diced 15g Butter 50g White Button mushrooms 2 slices Bread, stale and diced 1 Tbsp Parsley, finely chopped 1 Lemon, zest 2 Chicken breasts 1 Tbsp Oil 3 Tbsp Marsala, or sherry 2 Tbsp Cream Directions Stuffing In a small frying pan, fry the garlic and shallot in the butter until translucent. Add the mushrooms and fry for 2-3min until cooked. Add the breadcrumbs, cooking until the butter has been absorbed. Take off the heat, add the parsley and lemon zest and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. To cook the chicken Heat the oven to 180 deg C.

Dressing ½ cup Avocado oil ¼ cup Cider vinegar 1 tsp Sugar 1 tsp Mustard 1 tsp Salt 1 to taste Cracked black pepper Directions Stuff the chicken breast by lifting the tenderloin up (if there is no tenderloin, ignore this). Press half of the stuffing on to the breast meat. Cover the stuffing with the tenderloin. Wrap the breast with kitchen string to secure the stuffing in place and tie. Repeat with second breast. Heat a frying pan and add oil. Add the breasts skin side down and season with salt. When browned on one side, turn and season again. After 3min, place the pan in the hot oven for a further 10-12min or until cooked. Remove from the oven and cover with foil to rest for 5min. To serve, place the chicken on a chopping board and remove the string.
Slice in half and place on a warmed plate. Cover with foil while you make the sauce. Return the pan of chicken juices to the hob. Add the marsala or sherry and let it reduce for 2-3min (this is called de-glazing). Add the cream and taste for seasoning. Pour the sauce over the chicken. You may need to pour over through a sieve to remove any burnt pan leftovers. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Serve with potatoes and greens.
Thaw beans. Peel grey skin off beans. Wash snow peas and cut in half lengthways. Cut avocado in half, then remove stones and peel. Chop avocado roughly. Wash tomatoes and cut in half. Toss beans, snow peas, avocado and tomatoes with dressing. Dressing: Combine avocado oil, vinegar, sugar, mustard, salt and pepper.

1 pinch Salt 1 pinch Ground cinnamon ¼ cup Orange juice, use up to ½ cup Directions Nip any little loose ends from the yams. Boil or steam for 1015min or until cooked. Preheat the oven to 190 deg C. Place the yams in a lightly buttered 28cm oval baking dish. Drain the apricots reserving the syrup. Place the apricots over the yams. Combine the sugar, cornflour, salt and cinnamon in a saucepan. Combine the syrup with enough orange juice to make ¾ of a cup. Stir into the sugar mixture and heat, stirring, until thickened. Pour over the apricots and yams. Bake for 20min, until sizzling and lightly browned.

Coastal Spirit teens headed to Singapore with national team By Amelia ChristensenRose COASTAL SPIRIT’S Lily Bray, Britneylee Nicholson and Emma Clarke have been named in the New Zealand secondary school girls’ football team to travel to Singapore at the end of September. They will play two games against the Singapore women’s national A side and two games against the women’s club champions at Jalan Besar Stadium.
“It’s a good opportunity to form a really good team and culture,” Nicholson, 17, said. Clarke, 17, and Bray, 16, were at school when they received the email letting them know they had made the team. “I let out a small scream and I couldn’t stop smiling. I have really been wanting to get into this team for a while now,” Bray said. Said Nicholson: “When
I first got the email late at night I went around the house yelling and waking everyone up, I was so excited. I just felt all the hard work I had put in had paid off.” All three girls agree that the best part of being selected for the team is the great opportunity to play with other talented girls in a different country. The girls will be in Singapore from September 27 to October 6.
Late night teen basketball about more than just sport By Caitlin Miles TEENAGERS staying out until midnight might not sound good – but that’s the point of Midnight Basketball. It’s a new programme being led by Canterbury Basketball at the Celebration Lions Centre in Aranui. It aims to encourage young people aged between 13 and 18 to play basketball. It is open to males and
females to build skills and confidence. Young people need to be nominated to take part in the programme. Canterbury Basketball is working with Haeata Community Campus, Mairehau High School, Linwood College and other relevant youthfocused organisations. It’s not just about basketball, though, it will also include workshops on nutrition, health and wellbeing, substance misuse, communication, conflict
resolution and other topics. Canterbury Basketball general manager Paul Duggan said the programme was the first of its kind in the country. The idea was taken from Australia, where it operates on a national scale. It starts at 8.15pm and includes a hot meal, two games of basketball a life skills workshop and a free bus home at midnight. The programme will run for seven weeks from August 4 to September 15.

CSM is a not-for-profit organisation with a strong focus on community. On a Saturday morning the whole family can find something to suit. Preschool and junior school children can start their musical journey by joining in our experiential “Take Off with Music” while older children and adults may opt for group or individual lessons on a specific instrument (including voice). Those who already play are welcome to join in one of the great ensembles which all take part in regular concerts including Saturday soirees and the popular annual Showcase Concert. Solo Recitals where individuals can perform are held regularly. CSM also provides a comprehensive music education to participating primary schools via its Outreach programmes offering

Age is no limit - our Late Starters programme provides the opportunity for adults approaching retirement with more time on their hands to learn an instrument and join an ensemble with other like-minded adults. LEArning firST aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen.

The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

Staying hydrated keeps the mucus membranes moist, which keeps the immune system functioning optimally. Unfortunately, lattes and wine don’t count, but upping your intake of water is incredibly beneficial. aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. You’ll notice the difference!

The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used. This means that up to 80% of the energy which would be

wasted using a traditional positive pressure system is recovered, resulting in significant energy savings and therefore lower heating or cooling costs. Until recently, balanced pressure ventilation systems have been considerably more expensive than traditional positive pressure systems.
